Reading/writing: Students will continue to work on their "Cinderella" projects this week.  The projects are due at the end of the hour on Friday.  There is no assigned homework this week, although some students may choose to bring home their project to work on.

  

Week of December 9, 2013

Reading/Writing: This week students will begin the "Cinderella" project.  I have tracked down thirty different cultural versions of "Cinderella". They will be required to read five different versions and write down information on a variety of graphic organizers.  Once they have finished with the reading, they will write a compare/contrast essay.  This project will take the full two weeks until Christmas break.  The final copy of the essay is due on December 20th.

There will be no homework assigned for reading or writing during this time.

English: Students took a test on irregular verbs this morning.  Those students who do not earn a passing grade will have to fix the test for homework.  Fixes will be due on Wednesday.
    There will be no additional English homework this week.

Week of November 18, 2013

Writing: Personal narrative due Tuesday.

There will be no homework assignments this week.  Students are working on a group project about making text connections.  The projects are due on November 22nd.

The week of November 11-13, 2013

Students will be working on a group project for the next two weeks.  This project is an introduction and practice of the "Text Connections" concept.  Students will review/discuss all of the stories that have been read thus far in the school year.  They will be making--
 

• Text-to-text connections:  Comparing the similarities and differences between stories
• Text-to-self connections: determining how a story relates to them and a situation in their life
• Text-to-world connections: determining how a story relates to a current situation in the world-at- large

Homework--

     Test correctives are due Wednesday morning.

     Personal narrative is due November 19th.

English: Went over pg. 510 in the English textbook "How to Write a Personal Narrative".

Sorry for the missing post yesterday- have been having difficulty accessing my page.

Reading: Students had Open Book test # 25 for homework.  Today we worked on a time line for the story "Zlateh".

English: Continued to practice action verbs, auxiliary verbs, and verb phrases.  Students had verbe worksheet # 31 for homework. 

Writing: Poetry project was due yesterday. Today students began brainstorming personal examples of cause/effect. Short writing assignment is due November 5th.  It will be the first writing grade for the new marking period.


Important information:
   1. First marking period ends Friday.  All missing assignments for this marking period will become "0"s.  Report cards will go home some time next week.
   2.  Sixth graders will be going roller skating on November 6th.  Students with a failing grade in any core class or a behavioral referral to the principal, will not be able to go.
   3.  There is no party for Halloween in sixth grade and students have been asked not to wear costumes.

Reading: Students read "Zlateh the Goat" in class.  We are reviewing the story elements of setting, plot, and problem/solution this week.

English: Began unit on verbs.  Today reviewed action verbs and auxiliary (helping) verbs.

Writing: Poetry project is due tomorrow.

November 1st is the end of the marking period.  There is no school that day, so all missing assignments will become "0"s at 3:00 on Thursday.

Writing: The "Shoe"story is due tomorrow.  Students must hand in a rough draft and a final draft.

Extra credit in language arts for a box of Kleenex.  

6th grade will try one more time to walk to the tennis courts tomorrow for our Fun Friday activity.

Students will be reading two short stories this week, "Aaron's Gift" and "Water".  There are comprehension activities for these stories that need to be completed by Friday.  Because of MEAP testing, daily schedules will be different.  Students will receive the weekly homework on Monday and will have all week to complete it.

English:
Students will continue working on possessive nouns.  There is homework sheet that is due on Friday.

Writing:  
Students will continue to work on their "Shoe" stories on Monday.  Final drafts will be due on Friday.

There are many late or fix papers that need to be turned in.  These assignments must be turned in by 3:00 on Thursday.

Reading:  Students read "Sound of Summer Running" silently in class.  There were two in-class assignments:

      Answer the questions on pg. 12  #s 2,3,5 all parts and 6 (a) only.

   These assignments are not homework.  They will continue to work on them tomorrow in class.

  Reading:  Students started reading the short story "Old Ben" yesterday.  They worked on creating a chart of the story elements we have discussed this week and need to fill in examples from the story to go with each element.  In addition, we started learning how to answer questions completely.  They are also working on answering questions # 2,3,4, and  on pg. 158. These are due tomorrow.
        HW: Selection test 39 including essay question #21.

  English:  Continued our review of sentences.

Tomorrow during 8th hour, students may bring their electronics as well as a snack.

Because of the delayed start,  only third hour met for language arts.  On the delayed start days, we use the time to practice timed essay writing.  Students have thirty minutes to write and edit a three paragraph essay.  Students pick their own topic, do their brainstorming, and write the essay.  It must be turned in at the end of the time limit; it cannot be finished later.

  Reading: Students read the short story, "Eleven", in class.
                 HW: Reading comprehension worksheet that is due tomorrow.

The short story 'Eleven' was written by Sandra Cisneros in 1991. The story appeared in a collection of stories called 'Women Hollering Creek, and Other Stories'. The moral of the story is that one should enjoy life, no matter one's current age.

English: In class, students began learning about the parts of sentences: subjects and predicates.
                 HW: Four types of sentences worksheet that is due tomorrow.

Well- the first week of school is completed and it appears that everyone survived.  This week we will be on our regular schedule in language arts.  There will be activities in class and homework on Tuesday and Thursday.

English: students began learning about the four different kinds of sentences.

     Declarative: a sentence that makes a statement

     Interrogative: a sentence that asks a question

     Imperative: a sentence that gives a command or makes a request

     Exclamatory: shows excitement or strong feeling

Reading: began looking at the elements of stories and how to identify them.

    Students will be keeping a vocabulary journal throughout the year.

Students should have brought home a syllabus last week so that you are able to follow along with our various units throughout each marking period.

Writing: "How to Make My Favorite Cookie" essay  is due April 23
           Four paragraph essay- introduction, description of necessary materials, step-by-step          
                 directions necessary to  make the cookies, descriptive concluding paragraph.

Students have an opportunity to contribute to a "Letter Capsule".  They are working to fill a large container with letters they have written to themselves or to their friends.  The capsule will be stored in the ceiling until the night of their senior prom.  Parents and other relatives can also write letters.  Make sure letters are in an envelope with the student's name on the front.

Reading/Writing: Students continued work on the Titanic comic strip project.  Final draft is due at the beginning of the hour on Wednesday.
   There is no additional homework for tonight.

Future plans- On April 25th, students will be traveling to the Grand Rapids city museum to view a special Titanic exhibit.  More information will be coming home soon.

Because of the ice day on Friday, the due date for the Titanic comic strip is now April 17th.  Students will have class time on Tuesday to continue working on this project.

Students were introduced to the point system for the Michigan's Adventure trip at the end of the year.  They are supposed to share the information with their parents/guardians and return a signed slip by tomorrow.  The point system will start on Monday.

           They began work on a comic strip project that is due on April 16th.  Students will be given  class time to work on their project.

Titanic Comic Strip Project

                       

                                Final project is due:

Your task is to create a comic strip about the sinking of the Titanic. The strip must have all of the main events. Your illustrations should be worthy of newspaper publication. Your illustrations should show great creativity. Turn on your brain and let the creative juices flow.
Brainstorm the storyline.  Include setting, characters, and main plot events.	Brainstorm elements of a comic strip.
You must show me a rough draft before you can get the paper for the final copy.   Make sure you have planned out everything that will be on your final comic strip.   Make sure you have checked for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. 6th grade MEAP scores showed the most improvement for the whole middle school.  Because of this, they will be traveling to the museum in Grand Rapids to view the Titanic exhibit.  The trip is on April 25th.  More information coming soon.
