Week of June 2nd

Monday:
   In English we continued our investigation of prepositions.
   In reading we discussed cause/effect in non-fiction writing.  Students read "Houston Affects the World" and highlighted cause/effect examples.  Students answered the questions at the end of the essay.

Tuesday:
   In English we will review prepositions.
           HW: Preposition worksheet

   For writing: students will write a four-paragraph cause/effect essay.
           HW: Final draft of cause/effect essay

Wednesday:
    In English students will review prepositions.
    In reading students will read the essay "All the Pieces Matter".  They will work in table groups to summarize the article, identify the main idea and detail sentences, identify text connections, and look for examples of cause/effect.

Thursday:
   English will be a continued review of prepositions.
          HW: parts of speech review chart
  Reading HW: answer the ??? for the "All the Pieces Matter" essay.

Friday:
   English-- review of prepositions
   Writing: "Here to There" essay--  Due Monday

Week of May 26th, 2014

Tuesday:
    Students continued to study the differences between prepositional phrases and adverb phrases.
             HW: Prepositions worksheet

    Students read a persuasive essay about the Salton Sea.
             HW: Complete a T-chart of main ideas and supporting details.

Wednesday:
    Students will spend the hour investigating biodiversity and human causes for the loss of diversity.  We will read an essay together and highlight main ideas, supporting details, persuasive word choice, and introductions/conclusions.  Students will work in groups to answer questions.  There will be some short answer essay questions.  Students who do not complete the questions by the end of the hour will take the packet home for homework.

Thursday:
    MICHIGAN'S ADVENTURE!!
        Students who are not able to go on the field trip are expected to be in school all day.

Friday:
    We will continue on with prepositions.  We will focus on selecting the correct preposition for the sentence.
     We will read another informative essay and focus on the main elements of the essay.  There will be questions for students to answer at the end of the packet.  Students who do not finish during the hour will need to bring the packet home for homework.

Week of May 19-23, 2014

Monday:
     Delayed start
     Students will be doing a writing quiz: writing a four-paragraph essay that is due at the end of the hour.

Tuesday:
     Students will begin investigating the final part of speech--prepositions
     In reading we will continue with non-fiction reading: persuasive essays
                 We will read pgs. 580-584.  Students will complete the ?? 1-9 on pgs. 585
                          HW: Selection test

Wednesday:
     Continue with prepositions and prepositional phrases
     Students will gather information from a cereal box and create a 30-second commercial that will be presented on Thursday. Emphasis on persuasive word choices. They will write their presentation on a note card.
     
Thursday:
     More work with prepositional phrases.
     Presentation of cereal commercials.
         HW: Read pgs. 589-91  Create T-chart of main ideas and supporting details
                  Preposition worksheet

Friday:
   Go over the information for the Michigan's Adventure field trip.  Students who have enough points will be given a permission/informational handout. Students who do not have enough points to go on the trip are expected to attend school that day.
    More work on persuasive arguments.

May 12-14th

 Reading: Students continued with non-fiction reading.  Emphasis is on persuasive essays.
    HW: Read pgs. 572-575
             Answer questions # 2-5, all parts on pg. 575.  Answers must be in complete sentences.

Writing: "How To Make Favorite Cookie" writing is due on Wednesday.


On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will be taking the Smarter Balanced computerized assessment in 1st-3rd hours.  Therefore, there will be no language arts classes on those two days.

Week of May 5th, 2014

On Monday, we will do English and reading. We will do pg. 241 in the English book, #s 54-63.  This is a review of adverbs/adjectives. We will go over the Recipe Writing project which will be due on Tuesday, May 13. Students will be given a rubric for this assignment. There will be no class time given for this project. Students will then complete the Quiz Time sheet for chapters 10-15 in "Worms".

Tuesday will include homework assignments.  Students will work in their English books, pg. 245 #s 106-110 & 116-121.  Students will read pgs. 60-73 in “Worms”.  There will be an English worksheet and a vocabulary crossword for homework.

Wednesday will be a full day.  We will continue the review of modifiers by completing #s 1-16 on pg. 256.  They will read pgs. 74-82 in “Worms” and complete the comprehension sheet for those chapters.

Thursday will be the same as the previous days.  Today’s silent reading pages are pgs. 83-95.  We will work on pg. 250 of the English book, #s 1-14.  Homework will be the unit test for “Worms”.

Friday will bring completion of both units. Students will finish reading “Worms”.  They will complete the comprehension packet and hand it in at the end of the hour. The unit test homework is also due by the end of the hour.  Today will also be the last day for modifiers in English.

      Students received information about the point system for the Michigan's Adventure trip.  Parents should read over the information and return the parent signature page by April 11th.

Kettunen Center field trip:
    Students received information about the team building trip on April 17th.  Student should return the permission slip with $2.00.

English: Students began studying modifiers.  The first set of modifiers that we will investigate are adjectives.

They will write about the courage of the individuals we have read and talked about.  They will also write about a time they showed courage.  
                          Final drafts of the essay are due on Friday, March 28th.

All student are working on their "Neverland" project. Students are creating their own Neverland, using a variety of materials.  We talked about the project and discussed the rubric last Friday.  While students can bring home their projects to work on, it has not been assigned as homework. We will be devoting class time each day to the islands.

  I hope that everyone had a marvelous holiday season.  I also hope that you all survived the big chill!!


Writing: Students listened to two "fractured"versions of Cinderella. Students were assigned a "Fractured Folk Tale" writing project.  The final draft is due January 15th.  Students worked on this assignment in class today, but there will be no more class time to complete the project.

Looking ahead- next week is mid-term week.  6th graders will have a mid-term in each of their core classes.
              Wednesday- first hour exam
               Thursday- second and third hour exam
               Friday- sixth hour exam

Please note that Thursday and Friday are early dismissal days.  Students will be dismissed at 1:45.
